Assistant Research Scientist (Microbiology Team)

We are seeking a driven, organised and proactive individual to join a Cambridge based company as an Assistant Research Scientist in the Microbiology team. This position will focus on growing, archiving and sequencing therapeutic bacteria, in a state-of-the-art microbial culturing facility. You will have substantial work experience as a research assistant in a microbiology, molecular biology or genomics laboratory, and extensive experience of core microbiology and genomics techniques including%3B microbial culturing and characterisation, nucleic acid isolation, PCR and DNA sequencing.Responsibilities Isolation of gut bacteria Genomic DNA extraction Metagenomic DNA extraction Preparation of samples for NGS sequencing PCR Maintenance of electronic records Accurate and timely record keepingRequirements A degree in a Biological Sciences subject, or equivalent relevant research experience Experience as a research assistant in a microbiology or molecular biology laboratory Extensive hands on experience of NGS library preparation (desirably using Illumina MiSeq) The ability to train and instruct colleagues on the use of NGS platforms Extensive experience of microbial culturing Extensive experience of core molecular biology and genomics techniques including nucleic acid extraction and PCR Accurate record keeping with great attention to detail Proven ability to follow protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) A high level of motivation and desire to learn. Willingness to contribute flexibly to a new company as required, to help it succeed Proactivity in solving problems and responding enthusiastically to challenges Excellent organisational skills and work ethic. A demonstrable ability to manage numerous priorities simultaneously and to meet agreed deadlines Effective team player, with an ability to work independently and deliver projects to timescale and budget Proficient use of Microsoft office suite programs, including Excel and PowerPoint A high level of English language competency, including excellent written and oral communication skillsThe following would be beneficial: An understanding of microbial biology, genetics, gastrointestinal microbiota and sequencing technologies Familiarity with handling perishable, human derived materials
