Liftsharing ‘saves thousands’
15/6/2009The recent National Liftshare day was launched as fuel prices are steadily rising again amid the worst recession in decades.
The organisation responsible for organising the day pointed out that among the many benefits of car-sharing, the most relevant for many car-sharers this year will be the difference it can make to the cash in their pocket. It says the typical commuter who car-shares every day saves many hundreds of pounds every year.
There are also financial benefits for organisations. Research by the Department for Transport has found that a company with 2,000 staff would typically save £200,000 a year by setting up a car-share scheme for staff. In the last year, over 130 organisations have started liftshare schemes, and more than 75,000 additional members have registered for free across the Liftshare network, taking the total to over 330,000.
The tube strikes in London were another opportunity for Liftshare to promote its online service. Members don't need to own a car themselves. They can either offer a lift, or do a search for someone who is happy to drive in return for a contribution to fuel costs.
Liftshare's founder Ali Clabburn said, "June is the time of year when car-sharing is really in the headlines. I would encourage everyone simply to register their journey and do a search. No matter where you live, you'll be surprised to find how many other people are going your way."
